Mission
Chicago Dance and Music Alliance provides direct services to members engaged in all genres of dance and music in the Chicago area, acts as an advocate on their behalf, and disseminates information about their activities to the general public.

History
CDMA was created in 2001 with the merger of Chicago Music Alliance and the Chicago Dance Coalition, both of which had served their communities since the 1980's. Independent consultant Michael Hobor, reviewing services provided by Chicago area arts service organizations, said the Alliance "is a modestly sized organization that appears to provide its members value notably in excess of its size. It was interesting to me that not a single individual I interviewed raised complaints or pet peeves as a member." This commitment to quality remains a hallmark of the Alliance.

All of the Alliance's more than 150 organizational members are not-for-profit organizations, ranging in size from those with budgets of $50 million or more annually, to community-based organizations operating on a few thousand dollars a year. The total combined budgets of CDMA's members exceed $100 million annually. Every year, these organizations present more than 2,000 concerts, dance performances and operas, in addition to numerous in-school programs, reaching more than 3.7 million people with live performances.

The Alliance also has individual members, including performers, choreographers, composers, teachers, and administrators.

Public Information
The Alliance provides public information services, including this website and a telephone performance hotline (312-987-1123) with information on all public performances by member organizations and solo and recital performances by individual members.

Professional Recognition
Professional recognition is provided by the Alliance, which presents the Annual Awards for Excellence in Dance, formerly called the Ruth Page Awards, for excellence in dance in Chicago. Formerly the Ruth Page Awards, the Chicago Dance Coalition created them in 1986. The Awards will next be presented in the fall of 2003. Nominations are now being accepted on this site for performances taking place between July 2001 and June 2003.

Charitable Status
Chicago Dance and Music Alliance is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, to which all contributions are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

Simply The Best

Chicago is, simply, one of the best places in America for the performing arts. Every year there are thousands of events, in all styles of dance and music, presented by scores of excellent organizations.

The Alliance's listings capture the essence of Chicago's cultural life, whether you want classical or contemporary, dance or music, city or suburban. These detailed listings are available for tonight, next week or next year. Make CDMA's Performance Guide a regular stop when you want to know what Chicago has to offer.
