Chicago Dance Awards
The tradition of recognizing excellence in dance in Chicago gets a new twist with a new name for the standard-setting Ruth Page Awards.

The awards known since 1986 as the Ruth Page Awards are now called the Chicago Dance Awards. CDMA will present the 18th Chicago Dance Awards in the autumn of 2004, recognizing excellence in performances taking place between July 1, 2003 and June 30, 2004.

New in 2003 was the Elizabeth F. Cheney Dance Achievement Award, a single cash prize to be presented to an organization receiving a dance achievement award. The Cheney Award is meant to recognize excellence in past performance and the potential for future achievement, while providing the means to help attain future excellence. The Cheney Award will provide $5,000 to a not-for-profit organization in 2004.

Alliance Executive Director Matthew Brockmeier said that the Chicago Dance Awards will "make a statement about the wide range of high-quality dance in Chicago today, dance that owes its vitality to the legacy of Ruth Page and other dance pioneers, and to the energy with which Chicagoans undertake anything of value."

Nominating Guidelines
  • All nominations must be typed or printed (no cursive writing).
  • All nominations must include the award category (from the list below), name of nominee and reason for nomination. The name of the work and date of performance must also be included, if applicable. All information should be as specific as possible, with attention to clarity in the reason section.
  • Nominees in all categories may be either individuals or organizations.
  • You may make as many nominations as you wish, however, each nomination must be on a separate form. Text is limited to the space available on the form. Text submitted by e-mail is limited to a printed space seven inches (7") wide by three and one-half inches (3 1/2") tall. Additional printed material or text will not be accepted.
  • Awards are given at the sole discretion of the Chicago Dance Awards Nominating Review Committee and the Board of Directors of the Chicago Dance and Music Alliance, whose decisions are final. Not all categories may be awarded each year, and the Committee may change the category for which a nomination is reviewed.
